Do you often wake up with a headache or a clenched jaw? As a dentist, I see patients every day who experience these symptoms without knowing that the source of their problem has a name: bruxism.

I am Dr. Ionuț Lăzuran, a dentist at Smile Vision Dental Clinic, and I have prepared this article to help you understand that teeth grinding is not just a harmless habit, but a condition that can seriously degrade your teeth and quality of life. Fortunately, at Smile Vision, we have modern solutions to go from restless nights to truly restful sleep.
What is bruxism and why does it occur?
Bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth, especially during sleep. In my practice, I see that many people ignore the signs until serious consequences arise.
The causes we identify most often in the clinic:
- Stress and anxiety: The main driver of muscle tension.
- Occlusion (bite) problems: When teeth don’t meet properly, the body tries to “fix” this through involuntary movements.
- External factors: Hectic lifestyle or sleep disorders.
Life before the aligner
Before patients come to us, they go through a vicious cycle of discomfort. Here’s what I observe during a clinical examination of a patient with untreated bruxism:
- Dental wear: Blunt teeth, thinned enamel, and chipped edges.
- Prolonged sensitivity: Acute discomfort from cold or heat.
- Muscle tension: Mornings started with facial fatigue and headaches.
- Joint noises: Popping or pain when opening the mouth.
My solution: dental aligners. To stop this destructive process, I recommend a simple but extremely effective solution.
Cum realizăm gutiera la clinica Smile Vision:
- 3D intraoral scanning: I use a high-performance scanner to take an accurate digital impression, without any discomfort for you.
- Laboratory technology: This scan is immediately sent to the technician, who makes a tray made of hard transparent material, perfectly adapted to your arch.
- Its role: The aligner creates a protective barrier and distributes the huge clamping forces, providing your teeth with a necessary “shield”.
Life after the aligner
My greatest satisfaction as a doctor is seeing patients for check-ups and hearing: “Doctor, I finally wake up rested!“.
- Muscle relaxation: The facial muscles are no longer in constant tension.
- Guaranteed protection: Tooth wear is stopped, preventing dental cracks or fractures.
- Psychological comfort: You know that your smile is safe, even during more stressful times.

A patient’s story
“Although I am a person who takes great care of my teeth and never misses regular check-ups, I was surprised when Dr. Ionuț Lăzuran explained to me that there were fine cracks on the tooth enamel. The diagnosis was clear: bruxism.
He told me straight up: ‘If you want to keep your teeth intact in the long term, braces are a must.’ He explained that grinding at night puts a lot of pressure on my teeth that I can’t control.
The solution was quick: a custom-made aligner. Although the beginning was an adjustment period and I had to get used to it, today it is my peace of mind. I know that by wearing it every night, I no longer hurt myself and I protect my smile for the future.”
Bruxism treatment is not just about wearing a mouth guard. During the consultation, we also analyze the underlying causes: an incorrect bite that can be corrected or the need for relaxation exercises.
Conclusion
The difference between life before and after braces is a major one. If you find yourself in the description above, don’t let time dull your smile.
Frequently asked questions
1. If I wear a mouth guard, does the grinding stop or am I just protecting my teeth?
This is an important distinction. The mouthguard itself is a device to protect the tooth structure – it takes the friction force. However, by correctly positioning the jaw, it also induces muscle relaxation which, over time, can reduce the intensity of the urge to clench. To permanently stop grinding, we often also look at stress factors or bite (occlusion) balancing.
2. How long does a mouth guard last and how often should it be changed?
The lifespan of a retainer depends on how hard you grind your teeth. On average, a retainer made of hard digital material at Smile Vision can last between 1 and 3 years. We recommend that you bring it to your regular 6-month check-ups so that we can check its wear and ensure that it continues to provide the necessary protection.
3. Will I be able to sleep comfortably with it on or will it affect my breathing?
Being made through 3D digital scanning, the aligner molds perfectly to the teeth, without falling off or embarrassing the gums. There is a short adjustment period (a few nights), but most of our patients tell us that once they get used to it, they sleep much better because the facial muscles are no longer tense.
4. Are braces bought from pharmacies as good as those from the clinic?
The difference is huge. Universal aligners are not tailored to your unique bite. A aligner that doesn’t fit perfectly can do more harm than good by forcing your jaw joint into an incorrect position. Our aligners are custom-made to the millimeter to keep your joint in a neutral and relaxed position.

I’m waiting for you at Smile Vision for an evaluation. Let’s protect your smile together!
