Wishing to give the Tooth Fairy a well-deserved break from her legendary visits to children’s homes everywhere, we’ve put together a short informative guide for you, dear parents, with answers about dental demineralization in children.

Statistics show that 5 out of 10 children under the age of 3 already have a cavity, and 3 out of 10 children show signs of demineralization as early as age one. For this reason, identifying the signs of demineralization and taking appropriate measures as early as possible is absolutely essential.

Dental demineralization is the superficial erosion of enamel, which can occur both on newly erupted baby teeth and on permanent teeth.

It appears as chalky white spots, which may progress to yellow-brown discolorations and eventually develop into cavitated caries, leading to the loss of the dental crown due to the weakening of tooth structure.

Not every spot on a tooth indicates dental demineralization.

The diagnosis of dental demineralization is made by a pediatric dentist following an in-office consultation.

Although it’s difficult to pinpoint a single cause that leads to demineralization, studies in the field highlight a combination of contributing factors: from genetics and the mother’s diet during pregnancy to the child’s nutrition and the importance of oral hygiene from the very first months of life.

Demineralization, decay, and cavities typically occur at night. Saliva production decreases because the salivary glands are at rest, creating an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive and attack the enamel.

In the presence of poor oral hygiene, this process becomes even more dangerous due to the increased number of bacteria in the mouth.

Maintaining a rigorous oral hygiene routine from the eruption of the first tooth is extremely important.

How do we treat dental demineralization?

In its early stages, demineralization can be treated simply by using special fluoride-based substances recommended by the dentist after a consultation.

Using the treatment along with following the dentist’s instructions can stop the demineralization process and lead to remineralization of the tooth enamel.

In cases of deep cavitated lesions, after removing the decayed tissue, the dentist will shape the cavity and fill it to restore the tooth’s structure.

The more advanced the demineralization, the more complex the treatment becomes. From early and moderate stages where topical solutions or high-performance caps known as strip crowns are used to advanced stages, treatment may require general anesthesia or even extractions.

What can you do as a parent?

Schedule your child’s first dental visit as soon as their first tooth erupts in order to:

  • Detect early signs of demineralization or other dental issues,
  • Receive personalized advice on what to do and monitor at home so your child can maintain proper oral hygiene and avoid dental problems,
  • Build a relationship between your child and the pediatric dentist, helping them feel comfortable and confident during future visits.

Establishing a pleasant and positive interaction between children and the dentist from an early age is very important for future dental care. The presence of the dentist in a child’s life holds the same value as that of the family doctor.

Until the age of 12 and a half, which is around the time when the eruption of permanent teeth is complete, the AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) recommends check-ups every 4 months. Fixed orthodontic appliances also become especially useful starting from this period.

If you’re wondering why such frequent visits are necessary, the answer lies in the developing structure of children’s teeth—cavities can progress quickly and reach the nerve much faster. This can cause significant discomfort, acute pain, and difficult-to-manage situations due to the large pulp chamber in baby teeth.

Regular visits to a pediatric dentist can help you prevent, treat, and properly manage potential issues from an early stage. After the age of 12 and a half, once all permanent teeth have erupted, check-ups can be scheduled every six months.

At home, the frequency and accuracy of tooth brushing is a routine that children build through practice and by following their parents’ example. Using dental floss and mouthwash specially designed for children after brushing can also support efforts to prevent dental demineralization.
