Orthodontic treatment is a long-term investment in the aesthetics and health of your smile. Whether you’re undergoing treatment with fixed braces, removable appliances, or clear aligners, enjoying the desired results requires taking care of your oral health—and that starts with maintaining impeccable oral hygiene. Keep reading to discover what that involves, along with other tips to help you maintain your oral health during orthodontic treatment!

Why is oral hygiene important during orthodontic treatment?

Oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment is not just a recommendation—it is an absolute necessity to avoid potential complications. Braces promote the accumulation of dental plaque and an increase in bacterial levels. In addition, they make it more difficult to maintain proper oral hygiene.[1][2]

Failure to properly remove plaque can lead to enamel demineralization, cavities, and halitosis (bad breath). It can also affect your periodontal health and lead to the development of gingivitis and periodontitis.[1][2]

Tips for impeccable oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment

  • Proper tooth brushing is essential for maintaining good oral health at any stage of life, but it becomes even more important when wearing braces. While brushing twice a day is generally recommended, during orthodontic treatment the frequency should increase. Ideally, you should brush your teeth after every meal for at least 3 minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush. If brushing isn’t possible after eating, at least rinse your mouth thoroughly (with mouthwash or even plain water). It’s very important to use the correct brushing technique. If you’re unsure how to brush your teeth while wearing braces, don’t hesitate to ask your dentist or dental assistant for guidance.[3][4]
  • Flossing is another essential step in your oral hygiene routine. It should be done at least once a day to remove food debris and plaque that accumulate between the teeth and in areas that are hard to reach with a toothbrush. Flossing may be more challenging with braces, but it’s not impossible. Ask your dentist or assistant to show you exactly what to do! For cleaning under the archwire or other hard-to-reach areas, you can use interdental brushes.[3][4]
  • Using an antibacterial mouthwash can help reduce bacteria and prevent plaque buildup. It’s recommended to choose a mouthwash that contains fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities.[3][4]
  • As mentioned earlier, braces promote the accumulation of plaque and tartar and make brushing more difficult. That’s why patients undergoing orthodontic treatment are advised to have professional dental cleanings every 3 months. These cleanings ensure a deep cleanse of both the teeth and the braces and help prevent issues during treatment.

Oral hygiene with aligners

Aligners, also known as clear dental braces, are favored by many patients not only for their discreet appearance and comfort but also because they make oral hygiene easier. They can be removed when brushing or flossing, allowing for better cleaning.

Maintaining oral health during orthodontic treatment involves more than just paying extra attention to oral hygiene. Here are a few other recommendations to keep in mind:

  • Avoid foods that can damage braces or increase the risk of cavities—these include lollipops, chips, popcorn, caramel, chewing gum, nuts, pretzels, or even refrigerated chocolate. You should also avoid foods that require strong biting, such as whole apples or raw carrots—or at least cut them into small pieces before eating. It’s also important to avoid sugary foods and drinks, as they can cause stains and cavities around the brackets;[3][4]
  • Attend regular check-ups to ensure your orthodontic treatment is progressing well and to catch any additional issues early. The orthodontist will check the condition of your braces and make adjustments if needed. They may also perform a professional dental cleaning to remove plaque or tartar. The recommended frequency of check-ups may vary depending on the type of braces you wear, but generally, it’s advised to visit the dentist every 3–4 months;[3][4]
  • If a bracket or wire becomes loose, or if you lose an aligner, notify your orthodontist immediately;[3][4]
  • If you play contact sports, it’s recommended to wear a protective mouthguard to prevent damage to your braces;[4]
  • If you tend to bite your nails or other objects, you’ll need to break that habit—it can damage your braces, which may affect both the results and the cost of your orthodontic treatment.[3]

Maintaining oral health during orthodontic treatment requires a bit of extra effort, but the results are well worth it. Thorough oral hygiene, a proper diet, and regular dental visits will help you complete your treatment with a healthy, radiant smile.
