Do you dream of a perfect smile, with straight teeth and no unsightly crowding or gaps, but don’t want to go for the classic metal braces? An invisible brace might be the perfect solution for you! This relatively new method of correcting orthodontic issues is especially popular among our adult patients precisely because of its discreet appearance. Like any other type of braces, however, it comes with both advantages and disadvantages, which we’ll explore below!

What are invisible braces and how do they work?

Invisible braces, also known as aligners, are transparent orthodontic devices made of plastic that are designed to correct the position of the teeth. They work similarly to traditional braces by applying constant, gentle pressure to move the teeth in the desired direction—but without the use of brackets, metal wires, or elastics.[1][2]

The process begins with a digital scan of your teeth, followed by the creation of a set of customized aligners. These are worn almost all the time, being removed only for eating and oral hygiene. They are replaced periodically with a new set of aligners. Each set is slightly different from the previous one to allow for gradual tooth movement, and the replacement typically occurs every two weeks.[1][2]

The advantages of invisible braces for adults

Invisible braces offer multiple advantages for adults. Here are some of the most important ones:[3][4]:

  • Aesthetics – One of the most appreciated benefits of aligners is their discretion. Unlike traditional braces, which can be very visible depending on their type and may cause embarrassment in social or professional settings, aligners are made of transparent plastic and are nearly invisible when worn;
  • Comfort – Another advantage of invisible braces is the comfort they provide. Unlike traditional braces, whose components can cause irritation, invisible braces are made of soft, flexible plastic, avoiding discomfort. Additionally, they can be removed when needed, making them more convenient than traditional options;
  • Effectiveness – Depending on the case, aligners can be just as effective as traditional braces in treating orthodontic issues such as crowding, gaps between teeth, crooked teeth, or malocclusion (incorrect bite);
  • Easy oral hygiene – Since they are removable, invisible braces allow for more effective cleaning of the teeth and gums, helping to prevent cavities and gum disease. You simply take them out before brushing and can use your toothbrush and floss as usual, without needing special tools;
  • Predictability – The digital technology used to create invisible braces also brings several benefits. One of them is the ability to simulate the final result right from the start of treatment. This way, you can see what your smile will look like before the process even begins;
  • Fewer orthodontic visits – Another important advantage of invisible braces is that they require fewer visits to the orthodontist. Unlike traditional braces, which need regular adjustments, invisible braces only require periodic check-ups to monitor progress and receive new sets of aligners saving you valuable time.

Disadvantages of invisible braces for adults

Although invisible braces offer many advantages, it’s important to note that they also have some drawbacks:

  • High cost – The price of these braces may seem higher compared to traditional ones. However, from a financial perspective, they can be more cost-effective in the long run, as they don’t require frequent monthly adjustments and check-ups are less frequent. The savings from fewer visits to the orthodontist can quickly offset the initial price difference;
  • Strict discipline required – To achieve the desired results, aligners must be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. This requires a high level of discipline, which not all adults may maintain. Those who don’t follow this requirement risk prolonging the treatment or getting suboptimal results;
  • Limited indications – Clear aligners are not suitable for all patients or all orthodontic issues. They work best for mild to moderate cases. In more severe situations, a more complex treatment with traditional braces may be necessary;
  • Risk of losing the aligners – Aligners are small and can be easily misplaced. If you lose one, you’ll need to order a replacement, which can delay the treatment.

How to choose the right dental braces for you?

Choosing the right type of dental braces whether invisible or another kind depends on several factors, including the type of orthodontic issues to be treated, the patient’s age, lifestyle, and budget. The best thing you can do to ensure you make the right decision is to schedule an orthodontic consultation. After a detailed evaluation, the orthodontist will be able to recommend the most suitable braces for you.

Invisible braces are a modern, discreet, and effective solution for adults who want to improve the alignment of their teeth without compromising the aesthetics of their smile. Although they offer numerous advantages, it’s important to also consider their disadvantages before making a decision. Consult an orthodontist to find out whether this type of braces is the best option for your specific needs!
