Orthodontics, a specialized branch of dentistry, deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of abnormal positions of the teeth and jaws. Parents are often tempted to postpone a visit to the orthodontist until their child is older, believing that the problems will resolve themselves or that treatment is only necessary in adolescence. In reality, however, early orthodontic intervention, starting at a young age, can prevent serious complications and ensure optimal oral health in the long term.

Why is orthodontics important for children from a young age?

In young children, the goal or role of orthodontics is not necessarily to perfectly align teeth, but to ensure healthy development of their teeth and jaws. We do this by identifying and correcting dental and jaw problems before they become more complex. There are many reasons why orthodontic intervention is indicated from an early age, and below we will present the most important ones.[1][2][3]

Early detection of orthodontic problems and continuous monitoring

Many orthodontic problems are not obvious to the untrained eye. An orthodontist can detect subtle signs of malocclusions (improper bites), jaw growth problems, crowding, or abnormal tooth eruption. Early identification of these problems allows for prompt and effective intervention.[1][2][3]

Once a child is evaluated by an orthodontist, even if they do not require immediate treatment, the specialist will monitor the evolution of dental and facial development over the years. This way, any unexpected changes can be detected and addressed early.

Correcting jaw growth problems

At a young age, the jawbones are still growing and are much more malleable. This plasticity allows the orthodontist to guide the growth of the jaws, correcting discrepancies in size or position and ensuring a more harmonious facial alignment. For example, if the upper jaw is too narrow, a jaw spacer, a fixed orthodontic appliance, can be fitted to help widen it.[1][2][3]

Guiding the eruption of permanent teeth

Baby teeth play a crucial role in maintaining the space needed for permanent teeth to erupt. If they fall out too early, either due to untreated decay or trauma, neighboring teeth can begin to move into the space, preventing the permanent teeth from erupting properly. An orthodontist can identify the risks and intervene in time with special devices that maintain the necessary space or guide the correct growth of permanent teeth.[1][2][3]

This avoids dental alignment problems, which, among other things, will also create favorable conditions for maintaining proper oral hygiene during the period of changing baby teeth and after.

Correcting bad habits

Habits such as thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use, or mouth breathing can have a significant negative impact on dental and facial development. These habits can lead to dental malposition, occlusion problems, and even changes in facial structure. An orthodontist can identify these habits and provide solutions that help break them before they cause irreversible damage.[1][2][3]

Preventing chewing and speech problems

Malocclusions can affect not only the aesthetic appearance, but also functionality. An incorrect bite can make chewing difficult, leading to digestive problems, or it can affect the pronunciation of certain sounds, causing speech difficulties. Early intervention can correct these problems, facilitating efficient chewing and clear speech.[1][2][3]

Simplifying future treatment

One of the greatest advantages of early orthodontics is that it can simplify or even eliminate the need for complex orthodontic treatment in adolescence. By addressing problems in their early stages, severe complications that would require longer, more expensive, and sometimes invasive treatments in the future can be prevented.[1][2][3]

Often, phase I of treatment is followed by a period of waiting and monitoring, and then, if necessary, by a second phase of treatment, which is usually shorter and less complex due to the previous interventions.

Reduced long-term costs

Although it may seem like an additional expense, orthodontics for children at a young age can help you save money in the long run by preventing more costly procedures.

Doctors discussing treatment for orthodontic problems in children

When should a child be taken for an orthodontic check-up?

The first orthodontic check-up should be performed when the child is approximately 6-7 years old, according to the recommendations of the American Association of Orthodontics. This age is considered ideal because it allows for early detection of possible orthodontic problems, the child’s jaws are not yet fully developed and there is a mixture of baby and permanent teeth. This way, the orthodontist can assess whether the development of the jaw and teeth is proceeding normally or whether specific interventions are needed to correct certain problems.[1]

At the same time, if signs such as crowding of teeth, delay in changing from baby teeth to permanent teeth, or abnormal bite are observed, it is recommended that you schedule an orthodontic consultation for your child as soon as possible.[1]

Early orthodontics does not necessarily mean that a child will wear braces for years. Often, these interventions are short-term and may involve the use of removable or fixed braces, but they are less visible than traditional braces. The goal is to correct problems as they develop, not wait for them to become severe. Some children may only be monitored to see how their development is progressing. Even simple monitoring is essential, however, because it allows for timely intervention, if and when needed.[1][2][3]

Orthodontics for children is not just about smile aesthetics, but about ensuring optimal oral health and harmonious facial development. An early initial evaluation by an orthodontist can identify potential problems before they become serious and pave the way for a healthy and functional smile throughout life.
